🏉 Breaking News: Former Parramatta Eels Star Dean Widders Signs Coaching Deal with the Club…
Parramatta, NSW – July 22, 2025
In a move that has delighted fans and brought a wave of nostalgia to the NRL community, the Parramatta Eels have officially signed former club favourite Dean Widders as a member of their senior coaching staff.
The Eels confirmed the appointment this morning, announcing that Widders will join the coaching team as an Assistant Coach ahead of the 2026 NRL season. The deal is understood to be a three-year contract, with a strong focus on player development and Indigenous engagement.
A Return to Where It All Began
Widders, who played 112 games for Parramatta between 2002 and 2006, was a key figure in the club’s dominant run during the early 2000s. Known for his explosive attacking style and leadership on and off the field, Widders has since carved out a respected post-playing career as a coach and advocate for Indigenous players.
> “It’s an incredible honour to return to the blue and gold,” Widders said in a press release. “Parramatta has always felt like home, and I’m excited to help shape the next generation of players coming through this proud club.”
A Boost for the Eels
Parramatta Head Coach Brad Arthur (or his 2025 replacement if applicable) welcomed the decision, calling Widders a “natural leader with deep knowledge of the game.”
> “Dean brings passion, experience, and a strong cultural foundation — all of which are vital to our team culture and success moving forward,” said the head coach.
Widders’ appointment is also being hailed as a positive step for diversity and inclusion in the NRL, with league officials applauding the move.
What’s Next?
The Eels have had an up-and-down few seasons, and the addition of Widders to the coaching staff could mark the beginning of a cultural reset as they aim to return to premiership contention.
