Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson has announced he will be taking a leave of absence from the team following the death of his father, Robert Thomson Sr. The 81-year-old patriarch passed away earlier this week after a prolonged illness.

In a heartfelt statement, Thomson expressed his grief and gratitude for the support he has received. “My father was my greatest supporter and mentor, and his loss is deeply felt by our entire family,” Thomson said. “I am incredibly grateful for the understanding and sympathy from the Phillies organization, our players, and our fans during this difficult time.”

The Phillies have named bench coach Bobby Meacham as interim manager while Thomson takes time to be with his family and make arrangements. Meacham, who has been with the team since 2022, will oversee the team’s day-to-day operations in Thomson’s absence.

The Phillies organization issued a statement offering condolences to Thomson and his family, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with Rob and his family as they navigate this challenging time. We fully support Rob’s decision to step away temporarily and are committed to providing him with the space and support he needs.”

Thomson has been a key figure for the Phillies, leading the team to the postseason in his first full year as manager and earning respect for his leadership and dedication. His absence will be felt as the team continues its season, but the organization and players are rallying together in support.

The baseball community has extended its sympathies to Thomson, with many expressing their support on social media and offering their condolences. The Phillies have not announced a timeline for Thomson’s return, but the team is hopeful he will be back soon to resume his role.
