Santo, affectionately known as “Santo’s Sizzlers,” was a six-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner during his 15-year career with the Cubs. He was a key player on the team’s 1969 National League East division-winning squad and finished his career with 1,331 hits, 342 home runs, and 1,331 RBIs.
The news of Santo’s passing has sent shockwaves throughout the baseball community, with current and former players, coaches, and executives alike taking to social media to pay tribute to his life and legacy.
“Ron Santo was a true Cub legend and a dear friend,” said Cubs manager Joe Maddon. “He was an iconic figure in this organization and will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.”
The Cubs organization will hold a special ceremony at Wrigley Field to honor Santo’s memory, with details to be announced in the coming days.
Santo’s playing career was marked by impressive statistics and a passion for the game that inspired countless fans. However, it was his battle with diabetes and his tireless advocacy for diabetes awareness that cemented his status as a true legend.
Throughout his life, Santo was an outspoken advocate for diabetes awareness and education, using his platform to raise funds and promote awareness for the disease. He was a pioneer in the fight against diabetes and inspired countless others to do the same.
“Ron Santo was a hero on and off the field,” said MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. “He was a true legend of the game and a shining example of courage and perseverance. His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the impact he had on the game we love.”
The Chicago Cubs will wear special patches on their jerseys throughout the upcoming season in honor of Santo’s memory. Fans are also encouraged to wear their own “Ron Santo” patches or signs to show their respect for the legendary third baseman.
Santo is survived by his wife, Joan; two children, Jeff and Karen; and several grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending.
