NASCAR MOURNS THE PASSING OF LEGENDARY DRIVER, RICHARD PETTY

Charlotte, NC – The NASCAR community is in shock and mourning today, following the passing of Richard Petty, the legendary “King of Stock Car Racing,” at the age of 87.

Petty, a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and winner of 200 races, died peacefully at his home in Level Cross, North Carolina, surrounded by his family.

“We are devastated by the loss of Richard Petty,” said NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France. “Richard was a true icon and legend in the world of motorsports. His passion, dedication, and love for the sport inspired generations of drivers and fans alike. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the memories he created on the track.”

Petty’s impressive career spanned over three decades, during which he won numerous championships and set numerous records. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers in NASCAR history, earning him the nickname “The King.”

Throughout his career, Petty was known for his exceptional driving skills, his iconic #43 blue-and-white car, and his signature style, which included his signature cowboy hat and sunglasses. He also won the Daytona 500 seven times, a record that still stands today.

Petty’s impact on NASCAR extended beyond his racing career. He was a beloved ambassador for the sport, known for his humility, kindness, and generosity. He was a mentor to many young drivers, including some of the most successful drivers in the sport today.

“Richard was more than just a driver or a champion – he was a role model and a true legend,” said former NASCAR driver and current NBC Sports commentator, Dale Earnhardt Jr. “I had the privilege of meeting him many times and was always struck by his kindness, humor, and generosity. He will be deeply missed by everyone in the NASCAR community.”

Petty is survived by his wife, Lynda; their four children; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services are scheduled to be held at a later date.

In tribute to Petty’s legacy, NASCAR will hold a moment of silence before the start of this weekend’s race at Darlington Speedway. The track will also display a banner honoring Petty’s life and career.
