Fiji rugby sevens star Josua Vakurunabili has been suspended indefinitely from competition as he recovers from surgery. The key forward for the Fiji national team, known for his physicality and leadership on the field, recently underwent a medical procedure following an injury that has sidelined him from training and upcoming tournaments.

Details surrounding the nature of Vakurunabili’s injury and surgery have not been made public, but sources within the team confirm that he will need time to fully recover before rejoining the squad. His absence comes as a significant blow to Fiji’s sevens program, which relies heavily on his experience and strength in key tournaments on the World Rugby Sevens Series circuit.

Fiji head coach Ben Gollings addressed the situation, expressing the team’s concern for Vakurunabili but remaining hopeful for his full recovery. “Josua is a huge part of our team, both on and off the field. Right now, our focus is on his health, and we’re supporting him through his recovery. We look forward to having him back when he’s fully fit,” Gollings said.

Vakurunabili, who played an instrumental role in Fiji’s Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medal victory, has not commented publicly on the surgery. However, his teammates and fans have flooded social media with messages of support, wishing him a swift and successful recovery.

With Vakurunabili sidelined, the Fiji sevens squad will need to adjust their strategy as they compete in the highly competitive international sevens circuit. His leadership and presence on the field will be missed, but the team remains optimistic about their chances and Vakurunabili’s eventual return.
