Legendary guitarist and rock icon Eric Clapton has hinted at the possibility of retiring from music in a recent interview, citing ongoing health struggles and the increasing difficulty of life on the road. At 79 years old, the “Layla” and “Tears in Heaven” singer has spent decades captivating audiences with his soulful guitar playing and iconic songs, but now, he is contemplating slowing down as he faces the physical toll of years in the spotlight.
In the interview, Clapton opened up about his battle with peripheral neuropathy, a condition he was diagnosed with in 2016 that affects the nerves in his hands and feet. The condition has made playing guitar and performing on stage more challenging over the years.
“It’s been tough,”_ Clapton admitted.”There are days when the pain is overwhelming, and it’s hard to do what I love most, which is playing music. The road has gotten harder for me physically, and I’m having to think about how much longer I can keep going at this pace.”_
Peripheral neuropathy causes weakness, numbness, and pain, typically in the hands and feet, and has been particularly devastating for Clapton as a guitarist. While he has continued to tour and record music, the condition has added a layer of difficulty to performing live.
In addition to his neuropathy, Clapton has been dealing with hearing loss and tinnitus, conditions exacerbated by years of exposure to loud music, making his time on stage more strenuous. _”There are moments on stage where I struggle to hear myself play,” Clapton shared. That’s when it hits mehow much time I’ve really spent doing this and how it’s taken its toll.”
For Clapton, the idea of retirement is bittersweet. Music has been his life for over six decades, and stepping away from it isn’t an easy decision. However, as his health challenges mount, he has started to consider the reality of leaving the stage behind.
“I don’t want to stop, but I know that day might be coming sooner than I’d like,”_Clapton said. “I’ve been blessed to have an incredible career, and there’s nothing more fulfilling than connecting with an audience. But I also have to listen to my body and know when it’s time to slow down.”
Clapton hinted that he may not retire completely but will likely reduce his touring schedule and focus more on recording music and smaller, more intimate performances. He acknowledged that the days of lengthy world tours may be behind him.
The big tours, I’m not sure I can keep up with anymore. But I’d still like to play, maybe just in a different waysmaller venues, shorter tours. It’s something I’m thinking about seriously now,” he explained.
Throughout his illustrious career, Clapton has been hailed as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, influencing generations of musicians with his unique blend of blues, rock, and soul. From his early days with The Yardbirds and Cream to his solo career, Clapton has built a lasting legacy, earning multiple Grammy Awards and selling over 100 million records worldwide.
