The Miami Heat’s preseason preparations have encountered an unexpected challenge as Hurricane Milton passed through Florida. While South Florida avoided the worst of the storm, it still caused disruptions to the team’s schedule, resulting in the postponement of their home preseason opener on Thursday. Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra shared the team’s revised plan, which includes resuming practice on Friday in preparation for Saturday’s preseason game against the New Orleans Pelicans.
Spoelstra highlighted the importance of using the preseason to focus on both conditioning and evaluating potential rotations. “We just want to be intentional with the work that we’re putting in,” Spoelstra explained. “I want to play some of the main rotation players, but I also want to continue looking at the young guys.”
In the Heat’s preseason opener on Tuesday, they faced the Charlotte Hornets with a starting lineup that included Jimmy Butler, Terry Rozier, Alec Burks, Nikola Jovic, and Bam Adebayo. Despite the loss, Spoelstra emphasized that the game provided valuable conditioning for the players. “It was good to get that game conditioning in. No matter how much experience you have, it’s always different to play against another team.”
Nikola Jovic, the young Serbian forward, continues to impress. Having earned a starting role towards the end of last season and into the playoffs, Jovic has been given a chance to solidify his spot in the rotation. “His best basketball came at the end of the season and into the playoffs, and that was really important for him,” Spoelstra said.
Terry Rozier, who returned to Charlotte for the first time since being traded to the Heat last season, expressed excitement about the team’s depth and flexibility. He believes the variety of lineup combinations Spoelstra can deploy will be key to the Heat’s success this year. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. We have so many options, and it starts now,” Rozier remarked.
Looking ahead, the Heat are working hard to improve on their back-to-back 8th-seed finishes and are preparing for their regular season opener against the Orlando Magic on October 23. Despite the disruption caused by Hurricane Milton, the Heat are determined to refocus and make the most of their preseason.
