Shockwaves in Fijian Rugby: Head Coach Simon Raiwalui Replaced by Mick Byrne

Fijian rugby has seen a dramatic shake-up with the announcement that Simon Raiwalui has been replaced as the head coach of the Flying Fijians by Mick Byrne, a former All Blacks skills coach. The Fiji Rugby Union confirmed Byrne’s appointment after Raiwalui’s tenure ended following Fiji’s recent quarter-final run at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Byrne brings extensive international coaching experience, having served in high-level roles with the All Blacks, Wallabies, and Scotland. His success as the head coach of the Fijian Drua in Super Rugby Pacific further cements his qualifications for the new role. Byrne’s appointment reflects a strategic move by the Fijian Rugby Union, aimed at maintaining the national team’s upward trajectory and securing a foothold in the upcoming Nations Championship, scheduled for 2026 to 2030.
