Golden State Warriors legend Gary Payton has made his return to the NBA, but this time, it’s off the court. The Hall of Famer and former defensive powerhouse has signed a 3-year contract to join the Warriors’ coaching staff. Payton, who was known as “The Glove” for his lockdown defense during his playing career, will focus on player development, particularly working with guards and helping instill his defensive mindset into the younger generation.
Payton’s addition comes as the Warriors look to bolster their coaching team and continue their strong run in the NBA. With a wealth of experience, including an NBA championship with the Miami Heat in 2006 and a long career that saw him named to nine All-Star teams, Payton is expected to bring a high level of expertise and leadership.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr expressed excitement about Payton’s arrival, stating, “Gary has been a defensive icon in this league, and having him on board will help our younger players grow. His approach to the game and passion for defense are exactly what we need to elevate our team to the next level.”
Payton, who has previously expressed interest in coaching roles, is eager to embrace his new position. “I’ve always loved teaching the game, and being back with the Warriors, a team that values defense and winning, is a perfect fit. I’m excited to share my knowledge and help these guys develop on and off the court.”
The Warriors are set to benefit greatly from Payton’s defensive prowess, as they aim for another championship run with a roster filled with young talent and experienced
veterans.
