The 37-year-old Faumuina, renowned for his power, scrummaging expertise, and mobility, is set to bring invaluable experience and leadership to Fijian rugby.
Faumuina, who earned 50 caps for the New Zealand All Blacks, was part of their victorious 2015 Rugby World Cup squad and has since had a successful stint in France with Toulouse, where he further honed his craft in the Top 14 competition. His signing signals Fiji’s ambitions to rise as a formidable force in international rugby, with their sights set on the next World Cup and beyond.
Known for his immense skill and work rate in the front row, Faumuina’s presence is expected to not only strengthen Fiji’s forward pack but also inspire and mentor the next generation of Fijian players. His ability to anchor the scrum and make impactful contributions in open play will be crucial as Fiji aims to compete with the top-tier rugby nations.
Speaking on his decision to join Fijian rugby, Faumuina expressed his excitement: “I’ve always admired the Fijian flair and passion for the game. To be part of this rugby culture and help build something special is an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”
Fijian Rugby CEO John O’Connor echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the positive influence Faumuina’s signing would have on both the national team and the development of local talent: “Charlie’s experience at the highest level of rugby will be a massive asset for us. His professionalism and knowledge will undoubtedly lift the standards and guide our younger players.”
