In a shocking turn of events, world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz suffered a devastating collapse during his ATP Finals match against Holger Rune, fueling concerns about his health.
The 20-year-old Spanish sensation was leading 6-4, 3-2 when he suddenly clutched his abdomen and fell to the ground, unable to continue playing.
“I felt a sharp pain and dizziness,” Alcaraz said in a post-match interview. “I tried to push through, but it was impossible.”
Medical officials confirmed that Alcaraz was struggling with a severe case of gastroenteritis, which has been bothering him throughout the tournament.
“This is a tough blow for Carlos and the entire tennis community,” said ATP Tour Director, Andrea Gaudenzi. “We wish him a speedy recovery.”
Rune, who was trailing when the match was halted, advanced to the semifinals.
Alcaraz’ withdrawal may impact his ranking, potentially allowing Novak Djokovic to reclaim the top spot.
