Fiji rugby legend Jerry Tuwai has been handed a one-week ban following a disciplinary breach during a recent international sevens tournament. The two-time Olympic gold medalist and global sevens icon was sanctioned for unsportsmanlike conduct, as confirmed by World Rugby in a statement released today.
The incident occurred during a high-stakes match, where Tuwai was penalized for dissent toward a match official. While the breach is considered minor, World Rugby emphasized the importance of maintaining respect and discipline on the field.
Tuwai, known for his exemplary sportsmanship and leadership, has issued an apology, stating, “I take full responsibility for my actions. As a leader, I hold myself to a high standard, and I regret this lapse in judgment.”
The Fijian Rugby Union has also responded, supporting the ban while acknowledging Tuwai’s commitment to the team and the sport. “Jerry remains a role model and an ambassador for Fijian rugby. This incident does not reflect his true character,” the statement read.
The one-week suspension will see Tuwai miss Fiji’s next match in the ongoing World Rugby Sevens Series, but he is expected to return for the following fixtures. Fans have expressed their unwavering support for the star, with many calling the ban a reminder of the pressures players face at the elite level.
Despite the setback, Tuwai’s legacy as one of the greatest sevens players remains unshaken, and his quick return is highly a
nticipated.
