Anthony Gordon has recently opened up about the missed opportunity to join Chelsea during the summer of 2022, revealing that the move was “quite close.” At that time, Chelsea, under manager Thomas Tuchel, showed significant interest in the young forward. Gordon admitted that he was eager to work with Tuchel, feeling that his playing style suited Chelsea’s approach. However, despite the discussions and the mutual interest, the transfer ultimately fell through. Everton rejected Chelsea’s bid, and Gordon was sold to Newcastle United for £45 million in January 2023.
Reflecting on the failed move, Gordon emphasized the disappointment of missing out on what he considered a “big opportunity” but also expressed excitement about the future. He mentioned that after a match between Everton and Chelsea, Tuchel had shared some warm and complimentary words with him, further intensifying his desire to play under the German manager.
While the Chelsea transfer didn’t happen, Gordon’s career continues to flourish, especially with his recent call-up to the England national team. His resilience and commitment to growth, despite setbacks like the Chelsea deal, highlight his determination to make an impact at the top levels of football.
