Novak Djokovic has made no secret of his desire to win a second Davis Cup title with Serbia and now he has been given a first hint of what lies in wait in 2025.
Djokovic has confirmed he has set his sights on adding to his Grand Slam trophy haul and winning the Davis Cup for Serbia, with the challenge before him now becoming clear after the draw was made for the revamped competition.
Djokovic outlined his plans for the final chapters of his career in recent months, as he suggested Grand Slams and playing for his country will be his focus.
“As far as I am concerned, I am done with those tournaments for my career,” said Djokovic. “Whether I will play in other tournaments this year or in the future, I can’t say right now.
“My main priorities are playing for Serbia and Slams, everything else is less important.”
News of the draw for next year’s Davis Cup first round came on a day of big announcements by the International Tennis Federation, who also that the Davis Cup Finals will be moving from Malaga to Bologna in Italy.
With Jannik Sinner leading Italy to another Davis Cup success last month, the nation that is at the top of tennis right now will have another festival in their nation next year.
The ATP Finals will be staged in Italy a week before the Davis Cup Finals and that will ensure the game’s top players do not have to travel far to play in both events, with the format of the competition also changing.
A round-robin group stage of the competition has been held just after the US Open in recent years, but the International Tennis Federation has opted to return to home-and-away ties.
Each first-round tie consists of two singles matches on day one and also a doubles match followed by two singles matches on day two.
Top seeded Netherlands – who reached last month’s final against Italy in Malaga – were handed a bye straight into the second round which will be played between September 12-14.
Djokovic has made it clear that he has set his sights on winning another Davis Cup title for Serbia before he reties so he will be expected to play in the tie against Denmark that will come soon after the Australian Open
The Danes may have Holger Rune in their line-up, with the young Dane already having two wins against Djokovic on his record
Serbia may then face Spain in the second round of the competition, with Carlos Alcaraz expected to play for his nation as he looks to win the Davis Cup for the first time in his career.
