Jayson Tatum delivered a historic performance on Monday night, matching a legendary record held by Larry Bird as the Boston Celtics triumphed over the Chicago Bulls with a resounding 112-87 victory at TD Garden.
Tatum, the Celtics’ star forward, scored 38 points, guiding his team to a commanding win and solidifying his status as one of the NBA’s premier players.
With this performance, Tatum tied Bird’s franchise record for most consecutive games scoring 30 points or more to start a season, achieving the remarkable feat for the third straight game.
“I’m just trying to play my game and help the team win,” Tatum said after the game.
“Larry Bird is a Celtics legend, so to be mentioned in the same breath as him is special. I hope to keep it going.”
The game started with the Celtics quickly establishing dominance, and by halftime, they led 61-41, leveraging the electric atmosphere created by the home crowd.
Tatum’s first-half performance included a series of deep threes and mid-range jumpers that left the Bulls struggling to keep pace.
Kyrie Irving also contributed significantly, finishing with 22 points and 8 assists, while newly acquired forward Kristaps Porzingis added a double-double, pulling down 12 rebounds to go along with his 18 points.
The Bulls, who came into the game looking for their second win of the season, were unable to find their rhythm, with star guard Zach LaVine leading the team with 23 points but facing tough defensive pressure from the Celtics all night.
Boston’s defense was a key factor in the game, forcing Chicago into 15 turnovers and limiting their shooting to just 39% from the floor.
The Celtics’ bench also played a critical role, contributing 40 points and maintaining the lead even when the starters took a breather.
With this impressive victory, the Celtics improve to 3-0 on the season, while the Bulls drop to 1-2.
As Tatum aims to extend his scoring streak, Celtics fans are buzzing with excitement about what this season could hold.
Next up for the Celtics is a matchup against the New York Knicks, as Tatum looks to break the record set by Bird and continue his march towards superstar status in the NBA.
