Parramatta Eels forward Eric Newbigging has been handed a two-year suspension from professional rugby league after testing positive for a banned substance, the National Rugby League (NRL) announced today. The suspension comes after an investigation revealed that Newbigging had violated the league’s anti-doping policy.

The 24-year-old was found to have ingested a prohibited substance during an out-of-competition drug test conducted earlier this year. Although Newbigging has expressed regret for his actions, he has accepted the punishment and vowed to work on his rehabilitation during the suspension period.

“I fully acknowledge my mistake and take responsibility for my actions,” said Newbigging in a statement. “I want to apologize to my teammates, the Parramatta Eels organization, the fans, and everyone involved in the game. I will use this time to reflect and work on myself both as a player and as a person.”

The NRL’s anti-doping policy is strict, and the suspension sends a strong message to players about the importance of maintaining the integrity of the sport. Newbigging will be banned from participating in any NRL-related activities, including training with the Eels, during the two-year period.

The Eels club has expressed disappointment but reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the sport’s standards. “We support the NRL’s decision and will continue to provide Eric with the necessary support during this time,” said Parramatta Eels CEO.

Newbigging, who had shown promise in his early career, will now have to wait until his suspension ends before he can return to the field. The incident has cast a shadow over his future in the sport, but many are hopeful that he can come back stronger and restore his reputation.
