In a shocking move, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Justin Fields has ended his contract with the team after just two seasons in the Steel City.
The news comes as a surprise to fans and teammates alike, as Fields had been expected to be a key figure in the team’s quarterback rotation heading into the 2024 season.
The 25-year-old quarterback signed a four-year deal with the Steelers in 2022, but struggled to find consistency and chemistry with his teammates.
“I appreciate the opportunity to have played for the Steelers organization,” Fields said in a statement.
“However, I feel it’s time for me to move on and explore other opportunities that will allow me to reach my full potential as a quarterback.”
Fields was drafted by the Chicago Bears in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, but was traded to the Steelers in a deal that sent wide receiver Chase Claypool to Chicago.
During his time with the Steelers, Fields appeared in 23 games, throwing for 2,543 yards and 13 touchdowns, but also threw 14 interceptions.
The Steelers have been looking to upgrade their quarterback position in recent years, and this move could set the stage for a potential free agent signing or draft pick this offseason.
Coach Mike Tomlin released a statement saying, “We appreciate Justin’s contributions to our team and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
Fields’ departure leaves Mason Rudolph as the presumptive starter for the Steelers heading into next season, but it’s unclear who will fill out the quarterback room behind him.
The team is expected to hold a quarterback competition during training camp this summer.
The Steelers have activated quarterback Kenny Pickett, a second-year player who was on injured reserve last season, from the practice squad.
Pickett is expected to compete for the backup quarterback spot behind Rudolph.
As for Fields, he is expected to explore free agency and potentially sign with another team in the coming days.
