In a shocking development, the Pittsburgh Steelers have released wide receiver George Pickens and several of his teammates amidst a growing scandal that has rocked the NFL.
According to sources, an internal investigation revealed that Pickens, a promising young receiver, was at the center of a scheme involving several of his teammates who allegedly engaged in misconduct that fell short of the team’s standards and values.
The investigation, which was launched after a report of a disturbance at a team event earlier this month, uncovered evidence of horseplay and hazing that went beyond the norms of team-building activities.
The behavior, which included pranks and intimidation tactics, allegedly targeted younger players on the team.
Pickens, a second-round draft pick in 2022, was said to have been involved in some of the most egregious incidents, including the alleged bullying of a rookie teammate.
The 21-year-old receiver had been expected to be a key contributor to the Steelers’ offense this season.
In addition to Pickens, several other players were also released from the team, including linebacker Alex Highsmith, defensive back Tre Norwood, and offensive lineman J.C. Hassenauer.
The team has also suspended several other players, including quarterback Kenny Pickett and tight end Pat Freiermuth, pending further investigation.
“We take these allegations very seriously and will not tolerate any behavior that compromises the safety and well-being of our players or undermines our team’s values,” said Steelers General Manager Omar Khan in a statement.
“We will continue to investigate this matter thoroughly and take all necessary steps to ensure that our team culture reflects the standards we expect from our players.”
The Steelers are expected to release a full statement on the matter later today. The team’s season opener against the San Francisco 49ers is scheduled for Sunday.
This is a developing story, and we will provide updates as more information becomes available.
