Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is set to miss the first two weeks of the upcoming NFL season due to a lateral ankle sprain. The injury occurred during a recent practice session, where Stafford rolled his ankle during a passing drill. Medical evaluations confirmed a lateral sprain, and team physicians have recommended a two-week recovery period to ensure full rehabilitation.

This setback comes as the Rams prepare for their season opener against the San Francisco 49ers, followed by a matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. In Stafford’s absence, backup quarterback John Wolford is expected to start. Wolford has previously filled in for Stafford, including during the 2022 season when Stafford was sidelined due to a spinal cord contusion.

Head coach Sean McVay expressed confidence in Wolford’s abilities, stating, “John has consistently demonstrated readiness and competence when called upon. We have full faith in his capability to lead the offense during Matthew’s recovery.”

Stafford’s tenure with the Rams has been marked by both triumphs and challenges. He led the team to a Super Bowl victory in the 2021 season but has faced multiple injuries in subsequent years, including elbow and thumb issues, as well as a spinal cord contusion that ended his 2022 season prematurely. Despite these setbacks, Stafford returned in 2023, leading the Rams to a 10–7 record and a playoff appearance.

The Rams organization is optimistic about Stafford’s recovery and anticipates his return to the starting lineup in Week 3. In the meantime, the team will rely on Wolford and a strong supporting cast to navigate the initial challenges of the season.
