Orioles Mourn the Passing of  Rich Dauer

Baltimore, MD – The Baltimore Orioles organization and the baseball community are mourning the loss of Rich Dauer, a beloved former second baseman and key member of the team’s 1983 World Series-winning squad. Dauer passed away at the age of 72.

Dauer spent his entire 10-year Major League Baseball career with the Orioles, from 1976 to 1985, becoming a cornerstone of the franchise during one of its most successful eras. Known for his steady defense and clutch hitting, he played a vital role in helping the Orioles capture their last World Series championship in 1983.

Over his career, Dauer was respected for his work ethic and leadership both on and off the field. He played in 1,140 games, posting a career .257 batting average with 43 home runs and 372 RBIs. His reliable glove at second base made him one of the most dependable infielders of his time.

Following his retirement as a player, Dauer remained active in baseball, serving as a coach for various teams, including the Kansas City Royals, Milwaukee Brewers, and Houston Astros. He was a part of the Astros’ coaching staff when they won the World Series in 2017.

Orioles Chairman and CEO John Angelos released a statement honoring Dauer’s legacy:
“Rich Dauer was not only a key contributor to one of the most successful periods in Orioles history, but he was also a beloved figure in the clubhouse. His passion for the game, his leadership, and his dedication to his teammates will never be forgotten. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Fans and former teammates have taken to social media to share their condolences, with many reflecting on Dauer’s impact on the Orioles and the city of Baltimore.

A moment of silence is expected to be held in his honor at Camden Yards at the start of the upcoming season.
