Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has dismissed High-Performance Director Simon Raiwalui following controversial comments made about the women’s national team, in which he referred to a “gay problem” within the squad. The remarks, which sparked outrage both locally and internationally, led to swift action from the governing body.

Raiwalui’s comments surfaced during internal discussions regarding the Fijiana 15s team, where he reportedly suggested that the presence of LGBTQ+ players was an issue affecting the squad. His statements were met with immediate backlash, with critics condemning them as discriminatory and damaging to the progress of women’s rugby in Fiji.

In response, FRU issued a statement confirming Raiwalui’s dismissal, emphasizing their commitment to inclusivity and equality in the sport. “Fiji Rugby stands against discrimination in all forms. Our teams are built on diversity, respect, and unity. The comments made do not reflect our values, and appropriate action has been taken,” the statement read.

Raiwalui, a former Fiji international and respected figure in the rugby community, has yet to publicly respond to his firing. His departure comes at a crucial time for Fiji Rugby as it navigates leadership changes and prepares for upcoming international competitions.

The controversy has reignited discussions about LGBTQ+ representation in sports, with advocacy groups calling for greater awareness and protection for players of all identities. Many have also praised the FRU’s decision as a step in the right direction toward fostering an inclusive environment in rugby.

As the Fijiana 15s team continues its journey, the focus now shifts to ensuring that all players feel supported and valued, regardless of their background.
