In a shocking and unsettling incident, Parramatta Eels player Eric Newbigging was reportedly attacked by a group of fans while recovering in the hospital following a previous injury. The incident occurred during a training session, with the players and staff taken aback by the unexpected aggression.

Newbigging, who had been sidelined due to a serious injury, was in the midst of his rehabilitation when the attack occurred. According to sources, a group of fans, upset over his performance earlier in the season, gathered outside the hospital and launched verbal and physical abuse at the 24-year-old forward. Some fans allegedly threw objects, and one individual reportedly attempted to enter the facility.

The Eels have condemned the actions of the fans, with the club’s CEO releasing a statement that reads, “We are deeply disturbed by the actions of a small group of individuals. The safety and well-being of our players, both on and off the field, is our priority. We are working closely with authorities to ensure that this matter is addressed appropriately.”

Newbigging, who was not physically harmed in the attack, took to social media to express his gratitude for the support he’s received from his teammates, family, and fans. “I’m focused on my recovery and looking forward to returning to the field soon,” he said, adding, “I appreciate the kindness and understanding from the majority of supporters, and I remain committed to giving my all when I’m back.”

The incident has sparked widespread outrage among the broader rugby community, with many calling for stronger action against those responsible. Police have initiated an investigation, and the club is considering additional security measures to ensure the safety of all personnel during recovery periods.

The Parramatta Eels have pledged to support Newbigging through this difficult time, as both the player and the club navigate the fallout from this unsettling attack.
