In a surprising development for the Parramatta Eels, Assistant Coach Trent Barrett has terminated his 7-year contract following his brief return to the club in 2024. Barrett, who rejoined the Eels coaching staff in 2023, stepped into the interim head coach role mid-season after Brad Arthur’s departure. However, despite his best efforts, the Eels finished the season in 15th place, leading to significant changes for the 2025 season.

The club announced earlier this year that incoming head coach Jason Ryles would be restructuring the coaching team for the upcoming season, which notably did not include Barrett. As a result, Barrett has now confirmed that he will step away from his role, bringing an early end to his contract with the Eels.

Sources close to the situation suggest that Barrett and the Eels have mutually agreed to part ways, with Barrett’s contract formally concluded ahead of its originally intended term. The specifics of the contract termination have not been made public, but it marks the end of a turbulent chapter for the coach and the club.

Barrett’s return to Parramatta in 2023 came with high expectations, especially following his tenure as head coach at the Manly Sea Eagles. While his brief stint as interim head coach was challenging, many have praised his commitment to the team during a difficult period.

As the Eels turn the page with Ryles at the helm, Barrett’s future in coaching remains uncertain, with rumors circulating about potential roles with other NRL clubs. For now, however, he will be stepping away from the Eels, leaving behind a mixed legacy at the club.
