Although Lirola scored a key equalizer against Lyon earlier in the year (in a 3–2 loss), his overall impact this season was limited, and he saw little playing time. With just one year remaining on his contract, Marseille are keen to move him on now rather than risk losing him for free when his deal ends in 2026.

Lirola has largely been a fringe player since returning from loan spells at Elche (2022–23) and Frosinone (2023–24). He wasn’t originally expected to be part of De Zerbi’s squad last season but filled in when injuries and suspensions hit the defense.

Now, Marseille are counting on new summer signings to strengthen the backline—especially with Champions League football on the horizon—and see Lirola as expendable.
