The round of 16 at the 2024 Shanghai Masters will feature some hard-hitting tennis, as American Ben Shelton will take on World No.1 Jannik Sinner in a rematch of their fourth round encounter at last year’s edition.
The Atlanta native defeated Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets during his third round match on Tuesday, relying on his big serve to power past the Spaniard. Awaiting the American in the round of 16 is a familiar foe, as Shelton faced and defeated Sinner at the same stage during the 2023 Shanghai Masters.
Shelton hoping to replicate last year’s results
After losing to Shelton at last year’s event, Sinner would go on to capture two Grand Slam titles, in addition to claiming the World No.1 ranking. Furthermore, the Italian has faced Shelton on three occasions since their meeting in Shanghai, winning all three matches in straight sets.
Nonetheless, Shelton remains positive ahead of their fourth round encounter. Th 21-year old admitted to looking back on the match, and stated he was excited about facing Sinner again on the same stage.
Great memories from that match last year, I probably watched the tape of that a couple times so far this year,” said Shelton. “I’m really looking forward to it, that will be fun. It’s always a big opportunity whenever you get to play one of the best two or three players in the world.”
