The Montreal Canadiens have finalized a surprising trade, sending forward Joel Armia to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The 30-year-old Finnish winger has signed a six-year contract worth $24 million with his new team, solidifying his future in Toronto.
Armia, a versatile two-way forward, has been a key player for the Canadiens since joining the team in 2018. Known for his physicality, defensive reliability, and timely scoring, Armia recorded 14 goals and 20 assists last season. Despite his contributions, Montreal opted to part ways with the veteran as part of a broader strategy to revamp their roster.
“We thank Joel for his dedication and contributions over the years,” said Canadiens GM Kent Hughes. “This move allows us to gain valuable assets for our future while giving Joel an opportunity to continue competing at a high level.”
In return, Montreal will receive a second-round draft pick, a third-round pick, and a promising young prospect from Toronto’s system.
Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving praised Armia’s addition, emphasizing his value to the team. “Joel brings a wealth of experience, a strong presence on both ends of the ice, and a championship mindset. He’s exactly the type of player we need to strengthen our depth as we aim for a deep playoff run.”
Armia expressed gratitude for his time in Montreal but looks forward to the next chapter in Toronto. “I’ve had some great years with the Canadiens, but I’m excited for this new opportunity with the Maple Leafs. I’m ready to give my all to help the team succeed,” Armia said in a statement.
