The Chicago Bulls have announced that forward Jalen Smith has officially retired from professional basketball due to a persistent injury that has hindered his performance and recovery over the past year. The 25-year-old, who joined the Bulls earlier this season, made the decision to retire after careful consultation with medical professionals and family.
Smith, who was drafted 10th overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 2020 NBA Draft, had a promising start to his career. However, a series of injuries, particularly to his knee, significantly impacted his ability to maintain peak performance on the court. Despite rigorous rehabilitation efforts, the forward faced recurring setbacks that ultimately led to his retirement.
“I want to thank the Bulls organization, my teammates, and the fans for their unwavering support,” Smith said in a statement. “It’s been a difficult decision, but after consulting with my doctors and family, I know it’s time to step away from the game I love. My health must come first, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have played in the NBA.”
Smith had shown flashes of brilliance in his early years, especially during his time with the Indiana Pacers before moving to Chicago. Known for his versatility and defensive presence, he had hoped to make a significant impact with the Bulls this season but was unable to recover fully from his knee troubles.
The Bulls have expressed their support for Smith’s decision, acknowledging his contributions to the team, both on and off the court. “Jalen is a great person and player, and we fully support his decision to prioritize his health,” said Artūras Karnišovas, Bulls Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations. “He will always be a part of the Bulls family, and we wish him the best as he embarks on the next chapter of his life.”
As of now, Smith plans to stay involved in basketball in a non-playing capacity, possibly exploring coaching or other roles within the sport in the future.
The Bulls, who are currently rebuilding their roster, will likely look for additional depth at forward in the wake of Smith’s unexpected retirement.
