The Las Vegas Raiders have made a major organizational change, parting ways with head coach Josh McDaniels midseason. In a surprising turn of events, McDaniels also announced his retirement from football, signaling the end of a decades-long career in the sport.
The decision to dismiss McDaniels comes amid a disappointing season for the Raiders, who have struggled to meet expectations despite a roster laden with talent. Raiders owner Mark Davis released a statement thanking McDaniels for his efforts but emphasized the need for a new direction.
“We appreciate Josh’s contributions to the organization and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Davis said. “However, our performance this season has not reflected the standard we hold ourselves to, and we believe a change is necessary to move forward.”
McDaniels, a two-time Super Bowl-winning offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots, took over as Raiders head coach in 2022. His tenure was marked by ups and downs, including criticism over his handling of personnel and game management.
Following his dismissal, McDaniels announced that he would be stepping away from football entirely. “After much reflection, I’ve decided to retire from coaching,” McDaniels said in a brief statement. “Football has been my life for many years, but it’s time for me to focus on my family and other opportunities.”
Despite his struggles as a head coach, McDaniels’ legacy in football remains significant. As the architect of some of the Patriots’ most successful offenses during their dynasty years, he played a crucial role in helping the team secure six Super Bowl titles.
