In early 2024, the rugby community mourned the loss of 18-year-old Ratu Pasikali, son of former Flying Fijians lock Apisai Naevo. Pasikali collapsed during a training session and later passed away at Lautoka Hospital. This incident led to the suspension of the Fiji U20s coaching staff and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

In another sorrowful event, former Flying Fijians captain Mosese Taga passed away at the age of 57 after a short illness. Taga, who earned 48 test caps and participated in the 1987 and 1991 Rugby World Cups, was a revered figure in Fijian rugby. His passing was deeply felt across the rugby fraternity.

Additionally, during the 2023 Rugby World Cup, hooker Sam Matavesi experienced personal tragedy with the loss of his father, Sireli, in the week leading up to the quarterfinal match. This was the second bereavement the Fijian team faced during the tournament, highlighting the emotional challenges the players endured.
