The Boston Bruins have announced that head coach Jim Montgomery has been relieved of his duties following a disappointing start to the 2024–25 NHL season. The team began the season with an 8–9–3 record, prompting the decision to make a coaching change.
Montgomery, who was appointed as the Bruins’ head coach on July 1, 2022, led the team to a historic regular season in 2022–23, achieving a 65–12–5 record and securing the Presidents’ Trophy. Despite this success, the Bruins were eliminated in the first round of the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs by the Florida Panthers.
In the wake of Montgomery’s departure, associate coach Joe Sacco has been named interim head coach. Sacco, a former head coach of the Colorado Avalanche from 2009 to 2013, has been part of the Bruins’ coaching staff and will now lead the team as they aim to improve their performance this season.
General Manager Don Sweeney addressed the media regarding the coaching change, expressing the organization’s commitment to making necessary adjustments to enhance the team’s competitiveness. Sweeney emphasized that the decision was made in the best interest of the team’s future success.
The Bruins will look to rebound under Sacco’s leadership as they continue their pursuit of a playoff berth in the highly competitive Atlantic Division.
