Newcastle United Women’s head coach, Becky Langley, has expressed her disappointment over the absence of key midfielder Elysia Boddy due to a knee injury. Boddy’s unavailability coincided with the team’s recent 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest, marking their second consecutive loss after an impressive year-long unbeaten streak.
Langley highlighted Boddy’s significance, stating, “It goes without saying that Elysia is an absolutely brilliant player. We miss her when she’s not in the squad, of course we do.” Despite Boddy’s absence, Langley believed the squad had the depth to secure a win, adding, “Ultimately it’s one player in an excellent group of players within our squad and we should be able to win the game without her.”
The 20-year-old Boddy, a summer signing from Bristol City with Women’s Super League experience, has been instrumental in Newcastle’s midfield. She has been managing a knee injury, receiving injections in recent weeks, but the pain became unmanageable prior to the Forest match. Langley acknowledged her resilience, saying, “She’s a fantastic competitor and a very good player, especially for her age as well and we missed her today.”
This defeat has impacted Newcastle’s position in the National League North, with Burnley now five points behind but holding two games in hand. The team is striving for promotion, and Boddy’s return will be crucial in achieving their objectives.
