In a landmark decision, the Pittsburgh Steelers have agreed to a four-year contract extension with star linebacker T.J. Watt, making him the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL. The deal, announced today, is valued at $112 million, with $80 million fully guaranteed, ensuring Watt’s presence with the team through the 2025 season.

This agreement comes after a period of contract negotiations that saw Watt hold out during training camp. The Steelers, known for their strict contract policies, made exceptions in this case, offering Watt a signing bonus of $35 million and fully guaranteeing his salaries for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Watt’s performance on the field has been exceptional, with 49.5 sacks over his first four seasons, ranking sixth in NFL history. He has earned Pro Bowl honors each of the past three seasons and finished as a runner-up for the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2020.

Team officials, including owner Art Rooney II, have expressed a strong desire to retain Watt beyond this season, highlighting his importance to the team’s defense. This contract extension solidifies Watt’s role as a cornerstone of the Steelers’ defense for years to come.
