Nicolás Otamendi, one of the most decorated defenders of his generation and a cornerstone of S.L. Benfica’s backline in recent years, has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 37.

In an emotional farewell shared via Benfica’s official channels and his personal social media accounts, Otamendi expressed deep gratitude to his fans, teammates, coaches, and family, calling time on a career that spanned nearly two decades, multiple continents, and countless triumphs.

> “Today I say goodbye to the game that gave me everything,” Otamendi said. “It’s never easy to make this decision, but my heart tells me it’s the right time. I leave proud of everything I’ve achieved and grateful for every step of the journey.”

Otamendi began his professional career in his native Argentina with Vélez Sársfield before moving to Europe in 2010, where he played for FC Porto, Valencia CF, and Manchester City. At City, he won two Premier League titles and solidified his reputation as one of the Premier League’s fiercest central defenders.

In 2020, Otamendi signed with Benfica and quickly became a leader on and off the pitch. He captained the team through multiple title challenges, Champions League campaigns, and was instrumental in bringing experience and stability to the squad’s younger players.

Internationally, Otamendi was a pillar of Argentina’s defense for over a decade. He earned more than 100 caps and played in three FIFA World Cups (2014, 2018, and 2022). His crowning international achievements came later in his career — helping Argentina win the 2021 Copa América and the 2022 FIFA World Cup under manager Lionel Scaloni.

Benfica issued a heartfelt statement thanking Otamendi for his “unwavering commitment, leadership, and unforgettable moments,” and reports suggest a testimonial match is being considered to honor his legacy.

Tributes have poured in from across the football world, with former teammates, coaches, and fans lauding his passion, professionalism, and warrior-like mentality on the pitch.

With Otamendi’s retirement, football bids farewell to a true competitor, a natural leader, and a symbol of dedication in the modern game.
