Liverpool have pulled off a sensational transfer coup by signing Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz on a five-year contract. The total package for the 22-year-old German playmaker is worth a staggering £116 million, comprising an initial £100 million fee with a further £16 million in potential add-ons.

The deal, finalized earlier today, could eclipse the previous British-record transfer fee, placing Wirtz among the most expensive signings in Premier League history. It also marks a major statement of intent from Liverpool as they look to usher in a new era under head coach Arne Slot.

Wirtz, widely regarded as one of Europe’s brightest young talents, was instrumental in Bayer Leverkusen’s recent domestic and European success, showcasing his creativity, technical brilliance, and eye for goal. He registered 14 goals and 18 assists across all competitions last season and played a key role in Xabi Alonso’s dynamic squad.

Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes hailed the signing: “Florian is a world-class talent who fits perfectly into the vision we have for the future of this club. He’s young, ambitious, and has already shown his ability to perform at the highest level.”

Wirtz will join up with Liverpool’s pre-season tour in the coming weeks, and is expected to be central to the Reds’ plans as they push to reclaim the Premier League title and challenge in Europe.

In a short statement, Wirtz said: “Joining Liverpool is a dream come true. The club’s history, the fans, and the style of play are everything I’ve been looking for. I can’t wait to get started.”

The deal sends a clear signal to Liverpool’s rivals: the Reds are ready to compete at the highest level once again — and they’re doing it with style.
