Former England midfielder Dele Alli, once hailed as one of British football’s brightest prospects, is reportedly weighing up an unexpected exit from the professional game at just 29. Sources close to the two-time PFA Young Player of the Year claim that Alli’s dwindling opportunities, recent struggles to secure a club and a growing sense of disillusionment have pushed him to consider hanging up his boots.

Rising to prominence with Tottenham Hotspur in 2015, Alli’s blend of creativity and goalscoring flair earned him 37 England caps and a starring role at major tournaments. Yet in the years since, loan spells at Everton and a move to Turkish side Beşiktaş yielded mixed returns. Most recently unattached after leaving Ipswich Town by mutual consent, Alli has found himself without a firm pathway back to top-flight football.

“Dele’s passion for the game is still there,” says an insider. “But after so many setbacks, he’s questioning whether it’s worth the personal and mental toll to keep chasing a career that may no longer be there for him.”

Should Alli officially retire, it would mark one of the most startling career U-turns in recent memory. Still, many pundits believe his footballing intelligence and media savvy could open doors in punditry or coaching. For now, the former England international is taking time to reflect on life after football an unthinkable scenario just a few years ago, yet one that now feels increasingly real.
