Former player and Auburn defensive backs coach Zac Etheridge has resigned from his role, as was swiftly verified in an Auburn press release following a social media post.

According to a report from 247Sports, Etheridge will head to Houston, where he previously coached in 2019 and 2020.

According to the 247Sports article, Etheridge was a finalist for the head coaching position at Lousiana-Monroe. Instead, Bryant Vincent, a former New Mexico offensive coordinator, was brought on board.

Etheridge was a member of Auburn’s 2007–2010 team and captained the squad that won the 2010 national championship. In 2021, he returned to Auburn as the head coach of the safeties.

He remained with the team upon Freeze’s hiring in place of former head coach Bryan Harsin. However, Etheridge won’t be returning in 2024 after serving under Freeze for just one year.

This offseason, Auburn’s staff has continued to change. Both of Auburn’s coordinators have departed, with defensive coordinator Ron Roberts reportedly moving to Florida and former offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery having been fired.

Cadillac Williams, the former interim head coach and coach of the running backs, resigned on Thursday night.

There are no longer any coaches on the former head coach Bryan Harsin’s staff, having fired both Williams and Etheridge.

Auburn’s secondary will lose two of its three starting cornerbacks, DJ James and Nehemiah Pritchett, plus safety Jaylin Simpson and Zion Puckett to the NFL. Keionte Scott, a cornerback who was supposed to lead Auburn’s secondary the next season, was first rumored to have entered his name into the transfer portal but has now withdrew it and is going back to Auburn.

Maybe the one constant in Auburn’s secondary going into 2024 will be Scott’s return. It will be a highly young and inexperienced back of the defense for Auburn. Who will coach them is unknown.

Charles Kelly, a former defensive coordinator at Colorado, has reportedly been recruited by Auburn. His anticipated hiring became known just before Auburn’s Music City Bowl match. Auburn has not yet made his hiring public. Kelly spent his entire playing career at Auburn as a defensive back, and he mostly coached that position group. He might be a great option to fill one of the available coaching positions.
