Carnell “Cadillac” Williams, who has coached Auburn’s running backs for five seasons, said on Thursday night that he will not be rejoining the Tigers in 2024.

Williams stated, “I have decided to resign from my position with Auburn football in order to pursue other opportunities after taking some time to pray and think.” “Auburn, the players, and the AU family have my undying affection, but my wife, my sons, and I need to make this decision. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Coaches Malzahn and Freeze for granting me the opportunity to coach. On the Plains, these last five years have been extraordinary. Auburn holds a particular place in my heart and will always be so.

Williams, a 2001–04 Tigers player, led the team to the fourth-best rush offense in the SEC in terms of yards per game in 2023—a 23rd-ranked effort nationwide. In 2023, the Tigers’ average rush yardage per game was 189, which accounted for 53.8% of their offensive output.

Hugh Freeze, the third Auburn coach that Williams worked under, acknowledged Williams’ value to the team as head coach.

“Carnell’s contributions to the Auburn football program during his tenure as a coach are greatly appreciated,” Freeze stated. He is among the all-time greats of the program and guided Auburn through a period of change. I appreciate his decision and wish him nothing but the best, even though I know this wasn’t an easy one for him.

The departure of Williams creates a second position on Auburn’s offensive staff, after offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery was fired.
