The first external head-coaching hire of 2024 has taken place, with the Tennessee Titans set to bring aboard Brian Callahan to be its next head coach.

Tennessee fired Mike Vrabel earlier this month after six years with the team. Now, Callahan will stay in the AFC, after completing a five-year run as the Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator.

Callahan has never been a head coach but has spent more than a dozen years as an assistant coach in the NFL.

For the last four seasons, Callahan had coached in the same division as his father, Bill Callahan, who is the Cleveland Browns offensive line coach.

Bill Callahan was an NFL and college head coach, leading the then-Oakland Raiders to Super Bowl XXXVII, losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Brian Callahan takes over the Titans at a time when it appears to be the weakest team in an improving AFC South.

The Indianapolis Colts should have a healthy Anthony Richardson back this fall after going 9-8 in 2023.

Jacksonville also finished 9-8, but lost five of its final six games.

The Houston Texans won the AFC South this season and look to be set up well for the next decade with CJ Stroud’s phenomenal rookie season.

One big question Callahan will have to answer early into his tenure is what the team does at quarterback with the emergence of Will Levis and Ryan Tannehill still being on the roster.
