Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer got one of his first big commitments on Wednesday. After Nick Saban’s retirement, five-star wide receiver Ryan Williams decided to revoke his commitment to the program. Fifteen days later, Williams has decided to recommit to the program.

It can not be understated how big of a deal this is. DeBoer didn’t panic about players leaving the program amidst his hiring. He believed in the vision and was able to convey it to the players. While players have definitely left the program, there hasn’t been a mass exodus. Many key players have decided to stay, including quarterback Jalen Milroe. Offensive lineman Tyler Booker talked about why many players are deciding to stay, and it is all thanks to DeBoer.

We do not see this too often in college football. DeBoer has barely been in Tuscaloosa for two weeks and has gotten buy-in from the players. Williams was heavily recruited by other programs and decided to stick with his original choice. What this shows is that DeBoer can land the big recruits. The SEC is competitive, and often, new coaches need a couple of years to find their footing. This may be a seamless transition.

Alabama could surprise many people this season. After Nick Saban left, many fans immediately wrote them off. They are playing with a chip on their shoulder and could make some noise in 2024.
