As the Dallas Cowboys reel from an embarrassing first-round playoff exit, owner Jerry Jones has expressed interest in a new direction for the team”s coaching staff.

Jones recently made headlines with an unexpected statement about Belichick, a statement he made less than two weeks after a show of support for current head coach Mike McCarthy.

Jones stated explicitly that McCarthy would return for a fifth season, despite the team’s dismal playoff performance.

Jones referred to Belichick as someone he “knows personally” and “likes,” proclaiming that they could “work together” without a doubt on Tuesday.

“I know him personally and I like him,” Jones said of Belichick on Tuesday, via Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports. “There’s no doubt in my mind we could work together. None. None.”

Belichick carries an impressive professional record, winning six Super Bowl titles. Jones is well aware of these accomplishments, and he knows that enlisting Belichick does not necessarily insure a Super Bowl win.

Nonetheless, Jones knows also that there are few as successful as Belichick in the field.

“We all know that he’s certainly excellent, maybe at the top of his profession,” Jones said. “To say that any one person automatically assures you a Super Bowl is ridiculous. That’s too high [an] expectation for him. But is he maybe the greatest pro football coach of all time? Could very well be.

“He is a friend and I like him and I want to make real clear: I wouldn’t have any problem working with him.”

The potential union between Jones and Belichick is not one-sided. Belichick has often spoken of his admiration for the Jones family.

He has lauded Jerry and Stephen Jones for the organization they”ve built and the talent they”ve assembled.

Regardless of mutual admiration, Belichick continues to remain available for hire.

While there are no confirmed teams in pursuit of Belichick, the accomplished head coach is an attractive prospect for any professional football team.

While there is speculation that Jones would not release control to an accomplished coach like Belichick, Jones declined to dismiss the possibility.

Instead of dampening the rumors on Tuesday, he incited further speculation, effectively stirring the pot.
