Miami The Dolphins announced on Saturday that Anthony Weaver had been appointed as their new defensive coordinator, capping a 10-day coaching search.

Weaver has been with the Baltimore Ravens since 2021, most recently serving as associate head coach and defensive line coach. During his seven-year NFL career, the former second-round pick was a member of the Houston Texans and Ravens.

After firing Josh Boyer, the Dolphins signed Vic Fangio the previous season; however, Fangio left this offseason. He was hired by the Philadelphia Eagles shortly afterward.

Coach Mike McDaniel of the Dolphins praised Weaver in a statement, saying that he “has a proven résumé of success, built on his personal investment in his players.” Most significantly, he agrees with us that the foundation of both team building and long-term success is player development.”

Since 2012, Weaver has worked as an NFL coach, mostly with the Texans, Ravens, Buffalo Bills, and New York Jets as a defensive line coach.

He will take over for a Dolphins defense that finished sixth in rushing yards allowed and 10th overall in yards allowed per game in 2023. Over the next three months, that defense may see some changes. Christian Wilkins, a defensive tackle, linebacker Jerome Baker, and safety DeShon Elliott are all free agents this offseason.

The player with the longest contract in Miami is cornerback Xavien Howard, although it’s possible he won’t be back for the team in 2024.

Weaver has a history of accomplishments leading the Ravens’ running game. Baltimore has given up the third-fewest rushing yards in the NFL since he took over in 2021.
