After being rejected by Kliff Kingsbury, the Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly planning to choose former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy as their new offensive coordinator.

The two parties are reportedly negotiating a contract, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. It appeared as though Kingsbury would be hired soon after, but he withdrew from talks on Saturday. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Kingsbury is the front-runner to succeed Dan Quinn as offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders.

Before being let go, Getsy served as the offensive coordinator for the Bears for the previous two seasons. During each of Getsy’s years leading the offense, Chicago finished in the lower half of the NFL in terms of total yards and scoring, and he faced criticism for quarterback Justin Fields’ lack of progress.

After obtaining the first pick in the April draft from the Carolina Panthers, the Bears may decide to pass on the Ohio State product in favor of USC’s Caleb Williams this summer. The Ohio State product has not shown much development as a passer during his NFL career. Occasionally, Getsy’s scheme would peculiarly compel the explosive playmaker Fields to remain in the pocket and execute intricate reads.

Fields claimed that he thought he played “robotic” during the season’s poor start primarily because of the Bears’ coaching.

Reporters were informed in September that Fields “may be coaching, I believe.” “They are ultimately doing their job when they tell me what to look at, but when the game rolls around, I can’t be thinking about it at the end of the day. I get ready all week, and when the moment comes to play for free, that’s when I do it. Reduce your thinking and increase your playtime.

Although Fields later retracted his remarks and said he wasn’t blaming the coaches, it’s reasonable to say that early in the season he did appear stilted until he was given the go-ahead to play more naturally following his injury recovery. After the season, the Bears cut Getsy and the majority of his offensive staff because the results were still lacking.

With all of its questions, it will be intriguing to see how Getsy’s system functions in a Raiders offense. Wide receiver Davante Adams, who worked under Getsy with the Green Bay Packers, is probably one of Getsy’s fans, but the Raiders’ main quarterbacking worry is still there.

Because of his contract, Jimmy Garoppolo might return, but Vegas will undoubtedly search for a third quarterback to challenge Aidan O’Connell and him.
