Two of the richest contracts in NFL history are held by two of the top five quarterbacks chosen in the 2020 NFL Draft. Tua Tagovailoa is not one of them.

Even though Jalen Hurts and Justin Herbert received well-deserved contracts, the Miami Dolphins quarterback is content that he did not receive his massive extension.

Yes. Tagovailoa told reporters earlier this week, “I mean, it’s big.” “Big.” Let me start by congratulating him and Jalen (Hurts) on their respective contracts earlier. It’s excellent for the quarterback market, in my opinion. That’s my opinion, anyway. It is really beneficial to the quarterback market.

“It energizes and excites me. However, they also received what was rightfully theirs, and for that, I’m happy.”

With a fifth-year option that the Dolphins have selected for 2024, Tagovailoa is in the final year of his rookie contract. As he approaches Year 4, Tagovailoa is not thinking about a long-term extension because both sides have plenty of time to complete it.

“I think regardless of what it is, if they wanted to do it now, if they wanted to wait, whatever; I think for myself I’m always a person that wants to prove to myself that I deserve whatever I get,” Tagovailoa stated. Therefore, I believe that this is something I must strive for. That’s how straightforward and easy it is.

Following his season, Tagovailoa became the first quarterback from the Dolphins to top the NFL in passer rating since Dan Marino in 1984. With Tagovailoa starting for the Dolphins last season, they averaged 6.5 yards per play, which was the highest of any starting quarterback in the league. With Tagovailoa starting, Miami was 8-5 and scored 25.5 points a game on average; however, in the games that Tagovailoa missed, Miami was just 1-3 and scored 16.3 points on average.

With Tagovailoa, the Dolphins triumph, and they’re resolved to show that 2022 wasn’t an anomaly.

“I haven’t talked about any contract since what I’ve understood with my fifth-year extension,” Tagovailoa stated. “I don’t believe that concerns me. Things will happen because they are meant to happen that way or because you deserve them to.”
