The Oklahoma City Thunder has added a much-needed veteran center to its roster with the announcement of Bismack Biyombo’s contract.

Following a busy trade deadline that saw the Oklahoma City Thunder acquire Gordon Hayward, they looked for one more acquisition to complete their lineup before All-Star weekend: Bismack Biyombo’s signing.

Oklahoma City has focused on the backup center position throughout the season, and when it was unable to solve the situation through a trade, it turned to the free agent market.

Biyombo, a 13-year veteran who most recently played for the Memphis Grizzlies, was seated next to him. In 23.9 minutes a game, he averaged 5.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks. Even though he has never been more than a supporting cast member, the Thunder really needed that right now.

The 31-year-old’s strongest feature is his 7-foot-7 wingspan, despite his 6-foot-8 stature. It enables him to be a reliable pick-and-roll player and an efficient scorer near the rim, as well as a strong interior defender and excellent rebounder despite his tiny stature.

Although he won’t be expected to play a significant amount of minutes on an incredibly talented Oklahoma City team, head coach Mark Daigneault and his staff will appreciate having him available for extended periods of time, particularly during the postseason. Despite having an incredible season, Chet Holmgren’s debut year will see him make it to the postseason already. The game has changed significantly.

Not that Holmgren won’t try, but Biyombo can provide the Thunder with the rebounding and intensity they need when the circumstances call for it. His description as a “energy vet” by Saramento Kings guard Malik Monk is all Oklahoma City could ask for.

That’s not to suggest the novice and expert can’t collaborate on games, though. In order to be competitive in the rebounding department against some opponents, especially the Minnesota Timberwolves, a large lineup may be necessary. In those circumstances, Holmgren and Biyombo may play together. Because of Holmgren’s ability to hit 3-pointers, Biyombo’s meager offensive potential is rendered ineffective, and the floor remains wide open.

After All-Star weekend concludes, Biyombo is anticipated to formally enter the lineup, possibly replacing Jaylin Williams as the backup center. Though it’s hard to predict much from the addition, at the very least the Thunder now have another player to work with and utilize to help its young players get used to playing in the postseason.
