Many Denver Broncos fans find themselves in a state of uncertainty after their team indirectly parted ways with Russell Wilson, who ended up with the Pittsburgh Steelers. While it’s evident to them that Sean Payton has a plan for team-building, the lack of clarity can be unsettling.

Although the Broncos’ intention to move on from Wilson was apparent, there were few solid indications of their direction regarding their quarterback room until they actually traded him for minimal returns.

With the NFL Draft approaching, there is widespread belief that the Broncos may select a developmental quarterback from the 2024 class. However, the number of quarterback prospects they passed on has left many wondering.

Justin Fields was among the potential QB trades that the Denver Broncos opted against pursuing in the offseason, as pointed out by Jon Heath of Broncos Wire. However, it’s speculated that they might not have pursued Fields, considering they have the opportunity to select Caleb Williams with the top pick of the draft.

Other quarterbacks Sean Payton chose to pass on included Desmond Ridder, Mac Jones, Sam Howell, and Kenny Pickett.

It’s understandable why Payton may have decided against pursuing most of these young quarterbacks. Each of them has notable areas needing improvement: Ridder’s performance waned in his final year with the Atlanta Falcons, similar to Pickett’s situation. Jones displayed promise during his rookie season but has struggled to maintain consistency. Howell didn’t make a significant impact in Washington before being traded to Seattle.

In contrast, Fields has shown flashes of brilliance during his three years with the Chicago Bears. While his consistency issues might have deterred Payton from pursuing him, he could have been a promising quarterback for Payton to mentor.

The Broncos’ approach to the draft will be closely watched, as it will provide insight into whether they can compete in the AFC West in 2024 or not.
