In Mike Macdonald’s inaugural season as head coach, the success of the Seattle Seahawks largely hinges on Geno Smith’s performance reaching Pro Bowl caliber. However, this prospect appears challenging given the vulnerabilities evident in Seattle’s offensive line. With starters Damien Lewis (now with Carolina) and Evan Browns (now with Arizona) departing, there are significant gaps in Smith’s protection under the guidance of coordinator Ryan Grubb.

Nevertheless, the upcoming draft presents a promising pool of talented linemen, and Seattle’s relatively early pick at No. 16 offers the opportunity to secure a top prospect. NFL.com’s latest mock draft predicts the selection of Washington’s Troy Fautanu, who would reunite with Grubb in Seattle.

Described as an upgrade to the Seahawks’ offensive line athleticism, Fautanu brings versatility by immediately slotting in at guard. With Charles Cross and Abe Lucas anchoring the line, Fautanu’s addition adds flexibility, potentially enhancing Smith’s protection, particularly given Grubb’s expertise in working with linemen.

While it’s acknowledged that Smith sometimes prolongs his decision-making, a proficient offensive line could empower Seattle’s skill players to thrive. As the Seahawks aim for a return to the playoffs after narrowly missing out last season, providing Smith with a clean pocket becomes paramount, along with bolstering the running game.

Despite the injuries leading to lineup changes last season, maintaining health could significantly benefit Seattle’s offensive prospects. With some fortune in the health department and Fautanu’s potential contribution, optimism surrounds Grubb’s offense as they strive to support Smith effectively in orchestrating the team’s offensive strategy.
