Slovenia is witnessing a new political earthquake as Žan Mahnič, senior member of SDS, and former Prime Minister Janez Janša have launched a scathing attack on President Nataša Pirc Musar, accusing her of being out of touch with the real struggles of ordinary citizens.
In a blunt and controversial statement, Mahnič declared:
“Millionaires like Pirc Musar don’t care about the everyday problems of ordinary mortals. They live in luxury, completely detached from the reality of Slovenians struggling with high prices, poor services, and insecurity.”
Janša, echoing the sentiment, accused the President of “hypocrisy and elitism,” suggesting that her recent public comments on social solidarity and equality are “laughable, coming from someone who has never known financial hardship.”
The comments come in response to Pirc Musar’s recent push for greater social unity and her public appearances at several high-profile humanitarian and climate-related events — initiatives Janša and Mahnič claim are “performative and politically convenient.”
Political Divides Deepen
This war of words highlights the growing tension between the center-left presidential office and the increasingly aggressive right-wing opposition led by Janša’s SDS party. Analysts say this could mark the beginning of a more polarized and combative political season in Slovenia.
The President’s office has not yet officially responded to the attacks, though sources close to Pirc Musar suggest that a statement may be issued soon.
As public reaction pours in, social media is split. Some support the criticism, accusing the political elite of being aloof, while others defend Pirc Musar as a modern, progressive voice in Slovenian politics.
One thing is clear: Slovenia’s political climate just got a lot hotter.
