According to Brian Snitker, Signing Max Scherzer Might Not Be a Good Option for Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves are rumored to be considering a deal for veteran pitcher Max Scherzer, but such a move may not be the most strategic choice. Scherzer, a three time Cy Young Award winner with extensive playoff experience, could bolster the Braves’ pitching rotation, yet his age, recent injury history, and high salary introduce significant concerns  .

At 39, Scherzer’s durability is uncertain, especially after recent back surgery that has kept him out for stretches of the season. While his skills remain impressive, there’s always the risk that his performance could decline over the long haul, which could affect the Braves in key games. Additionally, his substantial contract, partially covered by the New York Mets, would still require Atlanta to make a hefty financial commitment .

Beyond financials, signing Scherzer would likely involve trading young talent, impacting the Braves’ ability to invest in their future roster. The team’s success with homegrown players and younger pitchers suggests that a long-term focus might yield greater benefits than a short-term addition. For a team built on sustainable success, investing in younger talent may be a wiser move than bringing on an aging, high-cost pitcher .
