CHOOSE LEEDS 2023–2024 COMMUNITY CAPTAIN

As part of the Premier League’s “More than a game” initiative, Leeds United is happy to name Barry Larkin, a devoted fan and participant in the Leeds United Foundation, as our Community Captain for the 2023–2024 season.

The Premier League recently unveiled the “More than a game” campaign, which aims to demonstrate how its extensive funding of football at all levels allows supporters of clubs to positively influence their communities.

Every Premier League, EFL, and National League club is selecting a Community Captain—someone who is the focal point of their league-funded initiatives and who merits praise for their dedication and social and athletic contributions—to represent them.

Having been a programme seller for more than 40 years, Barry Larkin is a well-known face on Elland Road and a beloved one among fellow supporters. This season, Barry has been selected as our Community Captain in recognition of his remarkable journey with Fit Leeds, one of the club’s official charity initiatives. His story is a true success that shows what’s possible when you’re prepared to take risks and push yourself beyond your comfort zone. Barry’s approach towards the Fit Leeds project was on par with that of the Premier League, and his 16 kg weight loss during the 12-week plan demonstrated a genuine commitment to make positive changes, much like his devotion to Leeds United. Due to the Premier League’s success, previously unheard-of financial support is given to all English and Welsh football leagues, from amateur to professional, for both men’s and women’s competitions.

The Premier League has committed to investing £1.6 billion for community projects run by 164 professional and non-league clubs between 2022 and 2025. These ideas and programmes will benefit individuals of all ages who most need it.

“One of the great strengths of football is its ability to have a positive impact on people of all ages and backgrounds,” stated Richard Masters, Chief Executive of the Premier League: “From fans watching in the stands to the millions playing grassroots football, and all those involved in community programmes run by clubs.

The success of Premier League football has allowed us to maintain our unmatched investment in all tiers of the sport. This makes it possible for clubs to provide transformative community programmes every week, across the nation.

“We will be honouring Community Captains associated with teams at all levels of the football pyramid during this campaign. They show that football is much more than just a game; they are the unsung heroes and those who go above and beyond the call of duty to improve the lives of others.”

A custom print, captain’s armband, and pennant have been given to each Community Captain—including our very own Barry—as a token of appreciation for their much-needed commitment and diligence. At a recent Leeds United Foundation game at Elland Road, first-team player Stuart Dallas was present to meet Barry and make the presentation with Simon Wood, the head of health and wellbeing for the Leeds United Foundation.
