Ange Postecoglou discloses center-back transfer plans following Cristian Romero’s injury.

Ange Postecoglou discloses centre-back transfer ambitions as Tottenham are given a blow with Cristian Romero.

After Cristian Romero was ruled out for up to five weeks, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou stated that the club is seeking to bring in a replacement center-back during the January transfer window.

The north Londoners have had a slew of injuries and suspensions this season, and concluded Saturday’s 2-1 win over Everton with a back four of Pedro Porro, Eric Dier, Ben Davies, and Emerson Royal.

Micky van de Ven has missed the last seven Premier League matches due to a hamstring injury, while Romero was forced off at halftime.

Spurs have lined up with a back four made up entirely of full-backs on various occasions and may be obliged to do so again this season.

They have already been linked with a number of centre-backs, ranging from Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo to Bournemouth’s versatile defender Lloyd Kelly, to give cover and competition.

The assumption had been that Spurs would look for a left-sided centre-back to replace Van de Ven, but Romero’s injury, combined with his questionable disciplinary record, suggests that a new right-sided centre-back may be just as important.

Postecoglou, on the other hand, has downplayed the issue, claiming that the club will look for a centre-back with the ‘appropriate traits’ regardless of whether they play on the left or right.

‘I don’t put as much weight in the left-sided or right-sided centre-back issue,’ said the Australian before of Wednesday’s match against Brighton.

‘We just need another player in that position who can provide some more depth for us and the potential to vary it up.

‘It doesn’t matter whether it’s left-handed or right-handed; it’s more about the profile and qualities.

‘We didn’t go out hunting for a left-sided centre-back at the start of the season; Micky just happened to be the perfect centre-back.

‘Even if we had another left-sided player, I would have signed him. It is a matter of looking at the proper profile, the correct qualities, and seeing what is accessible before proceeding.’
